The goal of today is to work together as women and support each other but also to see that it's not always about the glory. It's especially the things that cause us heartbreak, cause us to fail, that tend to make us who we are today.
I would like to say that every last lady sitting out there, if you have goals and dreams and aspirations, never let anyone tell you you can't do it. I am a living testimony that you can do it. I had an infant and a two year old when I started my business and I had to get up the morning, take a 75 mile drive to West Lake Village for a whole year to become a state firm agent. I had a husband who was on the SWAT team and so he wasn't always available so I had to really not just get my tribe together, I needed a whole village and during those days, there wasn't too many women of color. It was a predominantly male industry and predominantly Caucasian industry as well and I just really believed in myself and believed I could do it. If you like people, it's about networking. It's about going out there, shaking hands and building relationships and knowing what you do and doing what you love.
I started my career when I was 17 years old in radio, I didn't go to college. I was very insecure of myself growing up. I didn't have mentors, I didn't have people that looked like me in this space so for many many years throughout my 20's, I really felt that I did not belong there. That day between 17 was just luck, and it took me many many years to realize that it was not luck. It was my perseverance and I saw an opportunity and I took it and I was ready for that opportunity. We're here to create something bigger, we're here to create a legacy. I know for many of us our parents came here from another country, they did the ultimate sacrifice for us and the least we can do is continue that journey for them.
My mom is really the one who made me who I am today. She came here at the age of 12, she lost her mom when she was 2 years old. More importantly is the fact that at the age of 2, she contracted the polio virus. She had no mobility in her legs, her legs were completely deformed from the virus. She had a merchant marine uncle who had settled in New York City and had decided he wanted to bring her to the United States because there might be medical opportunity here for her, and there was so she came here and at the age of 12, spent the first two years of her life in the country living in Bellevue hospital where she underwent 12 different surgeries to straighten out her legs and she also went through physical therapy to learn how to walk with the assistance of braces and crutches. She learned English by immersion, she had no choice, she spoke Spanish in a world that was English dominated and so she had to learn. These crutches and braces meant she could go to school, that she could go to vocational school. She learned how to build and repair radios and so before she even met and married my dad, she had a career of her own. So, that was my example. So just imagine that, right? Could you as a kid really look this mom in the eyes and be like "I can't do that." Not really an option because she would look you straight in the eye and say like "You have two good legs. You can do it."
