A ground beetle (Pterostichus melanarius) attacking and eating a corn earworm caterpillar (Helicoverpa zea, also known as cotton budworm or tomato fruitworm depending on the plant it is feeding on). Pterostichus melanarius is one of the more common predatory ground beetles in agricultural fields. Introduced from Europe, this species has rapidly spread across the US and is often the most dominant ground beetle in crop fields.

Ground beetles are typically quick-moving and are usually black, brown, or iridescent blue or green. They forage on the ground and sometimes move into foliage to feed. Voracious predators, they use their large mandibles to grab and dismember prey. Corn earworms are one of the primary agricultural pests in the US.
